9.66 final

INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: This experiment may include contrasting light and dark color patterns that create a flashing effect. Please proceed with caution.

At the start of each round of the experiment, you will be shown a reference color that you should remember for the rest of the round. You will then be shown a series of test colors in one of the 3 different round formats: (1) light to dark, (2) dark to light, and (3) random order. For each test color you are shown, you should determine if that test color is lighter or darker than the reference color. The experiment will contain a total of 9 rounds, containing 3 reference colors paired with each of the 3 round formats in a random order.

You should use the keyboard key ā€œdā€ to indicate that the current test color you are seeing is darker than the reference color and the keyboard key ā€œlā€ to indicate that the current test color is lighter than the reference color. You will have 5 seconds to respond with either key before the next test color is shown, and you will not be able to go back to the previous color once 5 seconds is up or you have pressed a key.

For the first two types of rounds, the round will end after the first color you indicate as dark in format (1) and after the first color you indicate as light in format (2), since all following colors in the round will only get darker or lighter. Format (3) will take you through a set of 15 random colors before the round is finished. You should not screenshot, take a picture of, or keep any other tangible record of the reference color to use in comparisons. Instead, please use your best judgement from your memory of the reference color to make a choice for each test color.

When you finish the experiment, please copy the text containing the experiment results and send it to either Jie or Alicia. Thank you!
